Barking Wednesday ~ Bone Cancer

Each week I post Barking Wednesday. This weeks Barking Wednesday I am posting with tears in my eyes and a heart that is breaking.

It is with a sad heart that I write this weeks Barking Wednesday post. You have often heard me talk about Dozer. My daughters beautiful fun loving Chocolate Lab.

Sad sad times this past week.  As many of you know Dawn's dog Dozer was diagnosed with Bone Cancer. A fast growing cancer that is eating away at his bones and is taking over his lungs.

This is so sad - the world will miss Dozer - the Gentle Giant.  Dozer is a chocolate lab that is almost 6 years old. He weighed in at about 120 pounds.  He is as gentle as a lamb.  He is goof ball and we often refer to him as Scooby Do! Check out some of his pics!  He loves to dress up and we always thought he thought he was a human.

Bone Cancer - HOW? WHAT? WHY?  Dawn did a little research and found a very good article about bone cancer in dogs that she is reading to her three children to help guide them through this terrible time. It is very hard for them to understand why? Heck as a adult I keep asking myself the same question.

What lead to Dawn taking Dozer to the vet ? - It was his back leg.  This winter has been terrible in SE Wisconsin.  Snow & Ice everywhere.  We all thought that Dozer slipped on ice and hurt his leg.  He limped around then starting lifting his leg and only walking on three legs.   They noticed that the main joint was swollen and he was starting to chew on his paw.  So she decided to take him to the vet to check it out.

The vet felt his leg and immediately did a xray.  The joint in his leg was almost totally eaten away with bone cancer. The bones connecting the joint are also eaten away.  The vet then did a chest x ray and found cancer in Dozie's lungs.  A fast growing cancer that will take his life in a very short time. Dozer is losing weight fast -he has drop 15 pounds in less than a  month ... sad.

Pain control is now the families priority for Dozer - deciding when the pills can no longer
control pain will be a very difficult decision for Dawn & Dave.
Three children that love Dozer to no end are all helping to make the end of his life the most rewarding and totally loved. Each child is dealing with Dozer's illness in different ways.  As adults it is our role to guide them to their interpeace with life. Knowing that there is no real wrong or right way to accept or grieve. Each of us deals with issues in our own way.  I totally believe that understanding and acceptance guided by love can work miracles.

Dozer has been there for all of us whenever we needed him.....he protects, shares, plays, and comforts us. Now it is our time to make his end of life the best it can be - using pain control and love.

Well, I better get going...Dozer loves Mcdonald's vanilla ice cream cones.  Often McD's was a must stop location for ice cream when he rode with us in the Jeep.   I am getting his cone in a cup and taking it to him.  A little treat for his day.

While researching  - I found The National Canine Cancer Foundation. A foundation dedicated to finding a cure and helping prevent other dogs from being diagnosed just like Dozer.

They have really nice buttons for blogs for awareness.  If you can please share a button on your blog...by helping awareness we can make a difference.  Here is the link to the buttons: BUTTONS HERE

  1. Oh no, poor Dozer. And that is awful young for a dog - only six. The poor thing. It must have been such a heartbreak for the family.

  3. Poor darling. We had to make the difficult choice to put our dog down last year due to the same thing. I couldn't imagine her living in pain everyday, just waiting to die, so we all went to the vet and held her while she went to sleep. It was hard for us too.

  6. So sorry to hear about what happened. I'm hoping that by some miracle, Dozer gets better. I lost my beloved Stalin (a Shih Tzu) two years ago, and the pain of losing him was just too much to bear. :(

  17. It's really hard to understand when to let a pet go. Most people end up prolonging the animals' pain in order to keep them around, when the quality of life is so poor. I hope Dozer gets some relief soon.
