Gotta Wonder!!! WHY do some drivers feel the need to follow so close behind a car?
TAILGATING
My trip to work is all country roads - 55 miles an hour speed zone for about 85% of my trip. Yesterday morning at 5am I see two vehicles coming towards me. One large pickup truck and right behind it a very small compact car. The car is so small I think it could fit in the bed of the truck. The compact car was driving so close to the pickup truck that I thought the truck might be towing the car. Nope the car was tailgating. Now mind you there were no other cars on the road. I started to think to myself...what in heaven's name is that small car thinking?
Do tailgaters think:
- if they drive so close the vehicle in front of them will go faster - WRONG the majority slow down
- that they are intimating the other driver - WRONG
- that they are RIGHT? - WRONG
Gotta Wonder if the vehicle in front of them stops fast - who will they blame when they run into the back end of the vehicle?
Will they blame the driver of the vehicle in front...they should not have stopped so fast or will they blame themselves? I am betting they will blame the driver. Anyone that feels the need to drive that close to another vehicle surely would never blame themselves!
What do you do when someone is
tailgating you?
These pics are not mine....I can not drive and take pics...so I found these perfect examples on the internet.
Here in Massachusetts we are called massholes for a reason and tailgaing is a big one around here. EVERYONE drives like jerks.
ReplyDeleteMy Hubs is a tailgater. I keep telling him to knock it off. He has been much better about it though, so maybe I am getting through.
ReplyDeleteI hate tailgaters. I try to get out of the way if someone is tailgating me. And I try hard not to ride too close to someone else.
ReplyDeleteUsually I slow down even more when someone is tailgating me. I just hate it and don't really do it to others either.
ReplyDeleteTailgating just scares me to death. I try to avoid being any where near it. I live just I-77 and their are always wrecks on the mountain. It's like flirting with death for the ones who do it and those of us that get caught in it. People need to just stop doing it :(
ReplyDeleteUgh, tailgating is my pet peeve! Seriously, it just causes problems because people don't have enough time to stop and these jerks are usually the ones who cause accidents!
ReplyDeleteGlad to see that you are not trying to take pics and drive at the same time Debbie! Stay safe on the roads:)
ReplyDeleteI hate tailgaters they really wind me up.I do not get what they think they are achieving by stay that close except for tempting an accident.
ReplyDeleteThis is seriously one of my number one pet peeves about people and driving. I will never understand why people cannot leave a space between their car and yours. They don't realize that riding your butt won't make you go any faster!
ReplyDeleteI can't stand when people tailgate me. I typically make sure I ride the speed limit then, because I refuse to let them push me to go faster which is what they want.
ReplyDeleteI try to change lanes of get out the way. I make sure to go the speed limit, and won't let them push me to make a bad decision.
ReplyDeleteI think I truly have road rage. I want to slam my brakes on when someone tailgates me, but that would punish me more because I would have to deal with a beat-up car. I usually get in the other lane and give them an evil stare.
ReplyDeleteRoad rage has become such an epidemic that I would be concerned about that if I witnessed tailgating. Getting out of the way or encouraging them to pass is the best thing I think you can do.
ReplyDeleteMy husband steps on the brakes to be a smarty if someone's tailgating us, and I hate that too. I wish everyone would just follow the rules of the road, it'd be so much nicer. #dreaming
ReplyDeleteI'm one of those that will tap my breaks if someone is too close. I try to get over in the right lane to allow someone to pass me if they are going faster. I try to be courteous to other drivers and always hope for the same. It just doesn't always happen unfortunately.
ReplyDeleteOh man, that is awesome. I am another who will slow down if someone is too close and tap the breaks. That usually makes them angrier and they get the point.
ReplyDeleteI always move over when I see another car coming up quick. I rarely seem to get a tailgater behind me.
ReplyDeleteUGH! It is my pet peeve! I have a 12 passenger van so I do not get too much tailgating but when I do it irks me!
ReplyDeleteThey funny thing is... my uncle who was a police chief tailgated like nobody's business. When someone does it to me, I break check 'em.
ReplyDeletePeople ALWAYS tailgate where I live...so annoying! I usually just drive slower : )
ReplyDeleteIt's a regular occurence here in Trinidad too. I usually switch lanes or purposely slow right down where they have no other choice but to pass me. I don't know why people feel the need to play games on the road.
ReplyDeleteI agree that people drive slower when a tailgater gets behind them. I try to back off and not make anyone mad. :)
ReplyDeleteBefore I was a mother I would do the stupid thing and slam my breaks. Now I just slow down to almost a crawl if I need to. I hate tailgaters.
ReplyDeleteI hate when cars tailgate right on top of our bumper. The worst part is if you do anything to get them to back off they swerve around you acting like an idiot.
ReplyDeleteYeah, people can be so stupid using their cars as weapons apparently! So dumb
ReplyDeleteWhen I feel I am being tailgated I usually switch lanes and try to let the car in question pass. I'm paranoid so I try to keep a good amount of distance between me and other cars.
ReplyDeleteI don't drive! But I watch and oh boy do people ever tailgate and rush rush rush. I have no wonder why there's so many accidents it's bad!
ReplyDeleteI'm from Massachusetts, and when I was in Florida for the month I kept saying to my husband that I was getting anxiety over the fact that other drivers weren't rushing me or beeping if I took to long pulling out, exc. Up here everyone drives like idiots and its scary sometimes.
ReplyDeleteI know here in my town they do it because people in the left hand lane will not get over for those going faster. It's like they own the road.
ReplyDeleteI usually ignore tailgaters or change lanes. Some people are jerks doing it on purpose. I think others are just bad drivers and the car in front of them is their speed limit.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand why people do that. It doesn't accomplish anything.
ReplyDeleteIf someone is tail gaiting me.. I wait till I am in major traffic so they can't get by and slow down to 5 - 10 mph.. until they back the hell up.. I hate when they do this..
ReplyDeleteI must admit I will slow down . I figure if they love the arse-end of my truck so much they need to see it better. Irritates the heck out of me.
ReplyDeleteTailgaters are nothing but bullies. Sometimes I purposely slow down so they can just go around me because its never that serious - I rather them get away from me and get in front I will make it to my destination.
ReplyDeleteI can't stand tailgaters. My husband follows to closely all the time, and I always nag at him. I pray no one ever stops quickly.
ReplyDeleteThat is the WORST! I purposely slow down so that they'll pass me up. I'd rather get to my destination safely!
ReplyDeleteI really can't stand it when people tailgate me. If I'm in the fast lane, I try to get over so they can get by (I mean, it could be an emergency). I really don't like it though.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand why people do it either. I hate it when they do it to me. It makes me nervous that if I have to slam on my brakes that they will hit me.
ReplyDeleteThat is the worst. I've noticed how horribly people drive lately. If they aren't on your butt, they're hopping in front of you without looking. SMH
ReplyDeleteFlorida drivers are no better! I swear people are always in a hurry for no reason.
ReplyDeleteTailgaters are nothing.I always care about Keeping the appropriate air pressure in Car tires. It's very important for safety of myself and my car.I love this blog because it is user friendly with appreciative information.• this review
