This week on Barking Wednesday I thought I would post a good way to remove Skunk smell from your dogs fur. A blogger friend had her dog sprayed a couple of weeks ago. ICKY!!! Since I have had this happen to one of my dogs - I thought I would share what we did
to get Bo smelling good.
Use about 4 cups of Hydrogen Peroxide with about 1/2 cups of baking soda and 3 to 4 teaspoons of dish soap. Later into your dogs fur - making sure to stay clear of his eyes, mouth, nose and inside his ears. Keep rubbing the mixture into your dogs fur. This is a stinking job but make sure to really get the mixture into his fur. I would rub at least 7 to 10 minutes.
Be really careful around his face - I used my finger to get into the tight spots around his eyes, nose, mouth.
Rinse really well between baths. You should always do this treatment twice maybe even more times depending on how much spray the dog got on himself. Keep bathing him until the skunk smell has been neutralized.
Gosh it is a stinking job - but something that has to be done. When I was growing up tomato juice was the answer. I can remember when I was young my dog Blackie got sprayed by a skunk while we were up north on vacation. The 7 hour car ride was a ride I don't think any of us will ever forget. I am old and I bet to this day my Mom also remembers the trip.
Since there are just somethings I can not let go of - for Bo's final rinse we used tomato juice.

This is SO good to know. Our dog, Milo, has never gotten skunked, but my parents dog did once. It was awful.
ReplyDeleteI can remember my grandma giving their huge dog a tomato juice bath and it was the funniest thing in the world all those bottles of juice and this huge huge dog.
ReplyDeleteWe tried the tomato juice thing with my parents dog and it didn't work so well LOL.
DeleteThankfully I've never seen a skunk in town. I can't imagine my poor dogs getting sprayed they barely tolerate baths now!
ReplyDeleteThat must be horrible for the dog and the owner. I will be sure to share this with friends and family that have pets.
ReplyDeleteSkunk spray is the WORST. My dog got sprayed once, and it took forever for him to air out.
ReplyDeleteOh boy, skunk smell on dogs is awful. The only thing worse is when the dogs get in a fight with a porcupine and lose :(
ReplyDeleteThanks for this great how to. I've never had to do this, but I've smelled dogs that got on the bad side of a skunk. It's TERRIBLE.
ReplyDeleteI really hope I never have to use this...but it is a great resource to have just in case. I'd imagine the smell is much worse for the poor dog who gets sprayed.
ReplyDeleteThis is very helpful. I hope I don't need it, though!
ReplyDeleteI have seen so many friends have their dog get into a skunk. It happens. Great post to help those who deal with this. So far, we just have our Pug and she is only outside to go pee and poop so she doesn't ever have a chance to get into skunks.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great tip to know and one that I will pass on to my sister too.She has 3 large dogs who spend a lot of time outdoors.
ReplyDeleteI use peroxide and baking powder for offer removal around my house. I never thought to use it on a pet.
ReplyDeleteI have two dogs and this is a much better method than tomato juice. It does take a few baths but when you are done, you and your dog do not smell like a Bloody Mary!
ReplyDeleteThis happened to our dog once when I was growing up. It seemed like weeks before he was back to smelling normal and we could stand having him in the same room as us. All the shampoos we tried didn't seem to do anything. Great advice. - Katy
ReplyDeleteThis seemed to be a major problem at least once a year with our family dog. Good advice here!
ReplyDeleteI could have used this a few weeks ago. LOL I wonder if it works for stinky dear poo too?
ReplyDeleteSo tomato juice doesnt work:) Thats what I always heard but hate to do that to my yellow dog:)
ReplyDeleteI could have used this post last year. Our dog got sprayed and he smelled for weeks.
ReplyDeleteVery good recipe.. I have been lucky that it has been a while since our dogs have been sprayed. Thank goodness.
ReplyDeleteI almost needed this recipe for myself this past summer. We were walking by a skunk nest that that had a bunch of skunks that sprayed in it.
ReplyDeleteGood to know, I don't have a dog right now, but I'll keep this on file for future reference. Luckily none of my dogs had ever been 'skunked'.

I don't have a dog but this is good information and I will be sure to share it with my friends!
ReplyDeleteOh, I am so glad we never had to deal with this when we had our dogs. I used to worry about it because we had a Newfoundland and it would have taken forever to get that smell out of all that fur!
ReplyDeleteCan you believe my boyfriend actually likes the smell of skunk? I think he has a screw loose!
ReplyDeleteWe live in a really rural area, and this is definitely information that will come in handy from time to time. Curiousity can make the dog stink sometimes.
ReplyDeleteI would just die if that ever happened to my Rufus. OMG. Great advice
ReplyDeleteGreat advice! I am so glad I love in the city because my dogs already hate baths. I can't even imagine going through the entire ordeal with them, but I'm glad I know what to do now in case we ever come across a skunk.
ReplyDeleteI don't have a dog but my mom does. I'm hoping this never happens to her dog, but it's good to know there are ways to remove the smell.
ReplyDeleteBaking soda is good for cleaning almost anything! I've heard terrible things about dogs getting skunked.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I don't have a dog- this is a great post. I know so many people that this has happened to!
ReplyDeleteThankful I have never really come in too close of contact with a skunk because I heard the scent is super hard to get rid of.
ReplyDeleteOh I don't miss this at all LOL
ReplyDeleteWe had to deskunk a lot growing up in the Midwest, here in the SW... nada!
I always heard of tomato juice, but this sounds much easier! I hope I never have to deskunk my kids, LOL
ReplyDeleteSo interesting, I always thought of tomato juice as the only option! Thanks for sharing. I have a dog so I'm glad to read this.
ReplyDeleteGreat info, my dog hasn't been sprayed yet but every year we go camping and its my biggest worry.
ReplyDeleteI've been very fortunate that my dogs have never gotten into a stinky skunk situation. Knock on wood that it stays that way.
ReplyDeleteI've never lived near skunks when we had pets but I do remember hearing tomato soup did the trick. Great tips by the way.
ReplyDeleteThis is so cool! I live in a country with no skunks and always thought they were so cute! Kinda glad I haven't encountered one now...
ReplyDeleteThat would be so awful to have your dog skunked! Thanks for sharing how to get the smell out!
ReplyDeleteI've never even seen a skunk! I consider myself lucky.
ReplyDeleteI never knew it was smell that could be removed. Thankfully, the ones in my area are calm. :-)
ReplyDeleteMy friend could have really used this the other day - her dog got it good!
ReplyDeleteOh eww! Skunk smell is the worse! Luckily this hasn't happened to me personally. Yet...
ReplyDeleteThat is a memory (the car ride when you were a kid) I don't think many would forget. ;) Glad you found a way to get your dog clean. :)
ReplyDeleteMy dog got sprayed for the first time (ever!) this summer and it was AWFUL! I hope that never happens again.
ReplyDeletegreat tips. I am lucky and my dog has never been sprayed
ReplyDeleteuGh it's bad enough when it's in the air. I don't know how I'd handle it on my dog
