A Prison of Lies - A Journey Through Madness by Robert Thomas Doran Giveaway Ends 3/6

Almost without his notice, Tom had slipped from childhood through adolescence and then into young adulthood woefully unprepared for that transition. Both his childhood and his adolescence had been hells of isolation and rejection. And there had been no emotional support at home either. His only tranquility had been the wilderness, to which he escaped whenever possible.

But this is only the set up for the real hell which was to follow, coming in the guise of a beautiful and seemingly innocent young women named Mary. Schooled in etiquette, God, and discipline, she was equally skillful at secrecy and pretense. And unable to see behind her subtle facades, Tom mistakes her demure reserve for shyness and under that illusion, he tumbles into a deep, undying love, into which inexorably pour all of his pent up needs and desires. The delusion is only broken when Mary suddenly reveals a cold indifference to his emotions. Then upon dispatching him with sudden sly cruelty and consummate betrayal, she immediately vanishes behind a veil of silence.

In this explosive coming of age story we are taken down the rabbit hole of unrequited love and rejection, where in the depths of despair, Tom must wrestle with the devil of his darkest emotions and deny that devil his every temptation to commit heinous acts of evil. There is no rape or murder beyond the wild imaginings of Tom, who in the aftermath of Mary's brutality, goes completely psycho, in this nightmarish book of tragic love. In fact, it is almost miraculous that those atrocities do not happen, given the intensity of Tom's rage.

In witnessing Tom's struggle, however, we are brought to a better understanding of human sexuality, how people can be driven to violence, and why people sometimes die by suicide. As Tom makes a slow and arduous climb out of his abyss, we learn how to survive heartbreak and emotional abuse. Launching into psychotherapy, he begins the process of peeling back the onion to find his hidden demons. During this painful process he struggles with an inability to forgive himself for becoming a victim, and in equal part, an inability to forgive the ghost of Mary, for her profound cruelty and dishonesty. But with the scepter of suicide ever lurking, it becomes increasingly clear how much his very survival depends on his letting go of his anger and letting go of the past.

You may prefer to skip the foreword (written by and intended for professional therapists) and advance to the beginning of the story, which holds some of the books first cryptic poems that hint of lost love. They are descriptive of the struggle to come.

In order to come to terms with what has befallen him, Tom must first confront the reality of what had happened and thereby break the spell. To do this he must deeply examine every nuance and motivation of the personalities involved. Ultimately his quest for serenity will bring him to truths about human nature that are so simple and fundamental, they are perhaps universally understood by every fully formed adult. But to Tom's inner child, these truths have been consistently denied and unacknowledged.

A Prison of Lies is an unblinking look at the emotional development of a pathological mind. At times it is frightening and disturbing but it is also heroic and enlightening. It offers perhaps a unique Rosetta Stone for understanding many outcomes of mental illness with a clarity that can only be told by someone who has made that passage.

A Prison of Lies is a new kind of book on mental illness. Unlike many fictions which only use mental illness as a device to drive the plot, A Prison of lies plunges into the heart of the illness and keeps its focus there. And unlike nonfiction books on the topic, which tend to be dry and clinical, this book is a gripping read.

The Importance of Recycling!

Did you know that:
  • Recycling one aluminum can saves enough electricity to run a TV for 3 hours
  • Recycling one glass bottle or jar saves enough electricity to light a 100-watt bulb for four hours
  • Recycling one ton of plastic saves the equivalent of 1,000–2,000 gallons of
    gasoline
  • The energy saved each year by steel recycling in the USA is equal to the electrical power used annually by 18 million homes or enough to last Los Angeles resident power for 8 years
  • More than 30 million trees are cut down to produce a year’s supply of newspapers
  • A ton of paper made from recycled paper saves:
    • 7,000 gallons of water
    • Between 17 and 31 trees
    • 60 pounds of air pollutants
  • Recycling a pound of steel saves enough energy to light a 60-watt light bulb for 26 hours.
  • The energy needed to replace all the aluminum cans wasted each year is equivalent to 16 million barrels of oil - enough to keep a million American cars on the road for one year
  • Americans recycle only 5% of all the plastics produced in this country.
  • Americans use 100 million steel cans and 200 million aluminum beverage cans every day.
  • One drip per second from a faucet wastes 540 gallons of water a year.
  • It takes between 400 and 500 years for a Styrofoam cup to decompose. It takes an orange peel six months to decompose.
  • Using recycled glass uses 40% less energy than making products from all new materials.
  • Today, almost 22% of the glass produced in the United States is recycled.

Barking Wednesday ~ Healthy Dog Biscuits using Lentil Flour

Thanks for joining me for my Barking Wednesday post.
Each week I post stuff about my favorite guy...Kingers and his friends.
All kinds of stuff....products - homemade treat recipes - info I have learned over the years, etc.  Info I think is helpful in making sure that every dog lives a fantastic life.
Today I wanted to share a new recipe for dog treats. I received this recipe from a lady at my vet's office.

Healthy Dog Biscuits
  • 2 cups Lentil Flour
  • 1 cup  oats
  • 1 tablespoon dried parsley
  • 1/2 cup
  • nonfat dry milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup peanut butter
  • 1/2 cup  (if needed add a little more water)

Preheat the oven to 300°F ~ Lightly grease a baking sheets
Mix together dry ingredients ~ add eggs and peanut butter ~ gradually add water to make a firm dough

Roll into small balls  - place on baking sheet - flatten with a the bottle of a glass

    Bake  for approx. 50 minutes

I store these treats in the fridge to ensure freshness - I make small treat balls for Kingers.  He is over weight and the smaller the treat the better.  If you would like you can make cut-outs with this dough.

Why Lentil Flour? Natural diet for dogs does not have any flour - since dogs are descendants from wolves.   Good alternatives for flour include coconut flour, chickpea flour, and lentil flour.  I use lentil flour because it is less expensive in my area.  By using Lentil Flour Kingers treats are healthier for him.  Something that means a lot to me since he has started to have seizures. I also make his treats smaller since he is putting on weight with his seizure medication.  My goal is to make him healthier and hopefully lose some weight by making his treats smaller and using Lentil Flour.

Winter is a great time to make lots of Dog Treats.  Nice way to keep the kitchen warm while baking treats.  When the temp outside is -20 below zero...making dog treats is a nice way to spend the day in a warm kitchen.

    I'm venting .......

Yesterday I was having a "I Am Amazed at Some People on Facebook Day".   It was one of those days!  Have you ever noticed the comments people write on Facebook.  They respond to serious issues with a attitude that they are superior and the person that made the comment is a dimwit. People respond to positive comments with a negative comment.

I  read a post on Facebook where a child is missing  ~ someone writes "That is what you get for letting your child walk to the store."  SERIOUSLY! Do people really feel that way?

A person posted about her trip to Florida with her family. Someone writes "Must be nice to live off the government and you get to go to Florida."  The person that posted the comment is a school teacher. When did being a school teacher mean that you are living off the government.

How about this comment ~ A lady comment that her dog died. It was run over by a car.  A person comments "DOG KILLER ~ You are the reason the dog is dead! If you were a caring owner your dog would be alive." As a dog owner I know I try very hard to keep my dog out of the road but accidents do happen.

I totally get it that Facebook is a place where people can voice their opinions with no immediate threat to their lives. Saying these things to someone's face just might cause them harm. Why do people feel that on Facebook they are free to say whatever mean and nasty thing that pops into their heads.

That is what is so scarey to me...when I read about a dead dog...I do not think the the dog owner is a killer. When I read about a missing child - my main concern is to find the child not blame the parents. When someone goes on vacation I do not think that by some odd way my tax dollars are funding their trip.

Are we turning into a society that when we read a comment on Facebook we feel  it is correct to belittle, condemn, and hurt feelings.  Is that not the definition of a BULLY? A CYBER BULLY?

Next time you are reading Facebook comments make a mental note to yourself every comment that you do not think the person would say to someone's face in person.  You will be amazed at how high your number will climb.

I guess one way for me to "Make a Difference" is to make sure that everything I type on Facebook I would also say in person.  I think I can also "Make a Difference" by totally ignoring any Bully Comments on my post.  By ignoring a BULLY the BULLY gets ZERO satisfaction!

That is my plan of attack against Facebook Bullies!

Yes ~ I know I am not being forced to be on Facebook.  Being on Facebook is my own decision.
Yes ~ I know if I don't like the comment then get off Facebook.
Yes ~ I know that is their right to post whatever they want on Facebook ~ Who am I to judge them.

I totally get it..but it is NOT right to be so mean!
You know I feel better posting this!  Hopefully some will join me in the journey to make Facebook a nicer place to be.

Quaker Oats Steel-Cut Oatmeal made in the Crock Pot

Apples & Raisin Quaker Steel-Cut Oatmeal
    made in the Crock Pot

    1 1/2 Cup of Water

    1 Cup of 2%  Milk
1 Cup of Quaker Steel-Cut Oat
    3 Tablespoons of Brown Sugar

    1 Tablespoon of Flax Seeds
    1/4 teaspoon of Salt
    2 Tablespoons of Butter
    1 Cup of Raisins
    2 Apples diced

VERY IMPORTANT ...spray your crock-pot with a non-stick spray or give it a coat of butter. Prevents oatmeal from sticking to your crock-pot.

Mix all ingredients in your crock pot.  Cook on low for about 7 hours. I then place cooled oatmeal in a container. I store the container in the fridge and each morning I portion out a serving and heat my oatmeal in the microwave.  Hot tasty oatmeal in 2 minutes.

Why do I use Quaker Oats?

For over 138 years they have been the leaders in healthy cereal.  They were the first cereal to trademark and register for a patent in 1877. In 1922 Quaker Oats introduced Quaker Quick Oats one of the first convenience foods.  Then in 1966 they introduced Quaker Instant Oatmeal - followed by the first flavored instant oatmeal that hit the market in 1970.   In 1997 oatmeal was the first specific food the FDA approved the first health claim  – oatmeal for heart health. Heart healthy oatmeal is a perfect way to start my day.

Quaker Oats says quality and caring to me!  A name I can TRUST for my family!
This post is not a review...it is my real life! I received nothing from Quaker Oats to write this post or to use their product in my recipe. I use Quaker Oats because it is my oatmeal of choice!  Give it a try!

    2 Cups Flour
    1 Cup Chopped Pecans
Red Colored Sugar for top of      Muffins

In a small sauce pan add 1/4 cup Orange Juice and 1 cup of dried Cranberries. Simmer over medium heat. Set aside to cool.  Drain off any extra juice when ready to put into dough.

    Refurbish instead of Replace!

I wanted to share with everyone what my hubby did this past week that saved us so much money and made life easier for me. About 13 years ago I bought me a Dyson vacuum cleaner. I LOVE it!  But like me it is getting OLD!  I thought for sure we were going to need to buy a new one.  Last week he took the Dyson apart and told me to see if I could order parts.  We needed a new brush bar, new inside hose, belts, filters, and main outside hose.

To my surprize Amazon has all of the parts!  ALL of them!!!  Shipping was FREE!

My hubby was able to turn my 13 year old Dyson vacuum cleaner into a new one!  He cleaned it and replaced all of the worn parts! All less than $100!!! My Dyson works like a brand new machine!

This is a perfect way to Refurbish instead of Replace.  Throwing my DYSON away would of reduced our pocketbook by about $400!  Replacing the worn parts saved us major cash and is putting one less item into the landfills!

Barking Wednesday - Healthy Dog Ears

Thanks for joining me for my Barking Wednesday post.
Each week I post stuff about my favorite guy...Kingers and his friends.

All kinds of stuff....products - homemade treat recipes - info I have learned over the years, etc.  Info I think is helpful in making sure that every dog lives a fantastic life.

Labs are prone to ear infections.  Kingers is pretty good except when he does a lot of swimming.  If Kingers is swimming he will get a ear infection.  Here are a few tips I have learned over the years to ensure his ears
are healthy.  I always contact my vet whenever I think he has a infection.  His tale tale
sign of a ear infection is when he starts shaking his head.  If he shakes his head side to side...odds are he has some type of issue with his ears.  Getting medication quickly can make a huge difference.
The earlier I start the medication the faster his ears heal.

Here are a few natural tips I have learned to help reduce and improve Kingers ears.

    • Lightly apply Aloe Vera Oil or Vitamin E oil to your dogs red areas in his ear
    • By gently cleaning your dogs ears with a cotton swab or gauze dipped into vegetable oil can help to remove a buildup of wax and dirt.

Check out this pic of your dogs ear canals. Much different that humans.  Always be VERY careful when treating your dogs ears.

A update on Kingers seizures. Since he started taking his medication he has not had any seizures.  Last week he went to the vet for his blood work to ensure that he is receiving the proper dose of medication.  He is..his levels were right where they should be.
I am also happy to say that after one month on the medication - Kingers is back to acting like himself. At 1st when he started the Phenobarbital he acted a little goofy. Walking was not steady and he kind of acted drunk - but now he is back to normal! :) There is a few side effects to the medicine that he has. Number 1 is weight gain. He gained 2 pounds in one month! Not good! So we have started him on a healthy weight control plan. Number 2 is the amount of water he wants. He has NEVER been a toilet drinker. Since he started on the medicine we have had to increase the water we keep in his bowl. If not he will seek out a open toilet! ICKY!!!  When I told the vet about these issues the vet told me that these are two of the most popular side effects of Phenobarbital.
