Unholy Night by Seth Grahame-Smith

From the author of the New York Times bestselling Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Huntercomes UNHOLY NIGHT, the next evolution in dark historical revisionism.

They're an iconic part of history's most celebrated birth. But what do we really know about the Three Kings of the Nativity, besides the fact that they followed a star to Bethlehem bearing strange gifts? The Bible has little to say about this enigmatic trio. But leave it to Seth Grahame-Smith, the brilliant and twisted mind behind Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies to take a little mystery, bend a little history, and weave an epic tale.

In Grahame-Smith's telling, the so-called "Three Wise Men" are infamous thieves, led by the dark, murderous Balthazar. After a daring escape from Herod's prison, they stumble upon the famous manger and its newborn king. The last thing Balthazar needs is to be slowed down by young Joseph, Mary and their infant. But when Herod's men begin to slaughter the first born in Judea, he has no choice but to help them escape to Egypt.

It's the beginning of an adventure that will see them fight the last magical creatures of the Old Testament; cross paths with biblical figures like Pontius Pilate and John the Baptist; and finally deliver them to Egypt. It may just be the greatest story never told.

Review
Unholy Night was one of the monthly reads for our Book Discussion Group.  I loved the book. It took me on an amazing ride through a time I have read about numerous times in the Bible.  Seth was able to take me in such a different direction that my mind immediately was intrigued about where I was going.  Amazing read and I highly recommend the book. I plan to read Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter this year. One of the ladies in our Book Group gave Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter a strong recommendation.

Barking Wednesday ~ What age should a puppy leave the litter?

This Barking Wednesday I wanted to post about ~ What is the right age for a puppy to leave the litter?

Diesel will be able to come live with us when he is 10 weeks old. I did a lot of checking and asking questions as to what is the perfect time for a puppy to leave the litter.

Here is what I have found out.
As for a certain time -there is none. Leaving the litter depends on the breed of the dog, size of the litter, size of the puppies and the number of puppies in the litter. The Kennel Club  does not state the ideal age - because there isn't one.

Many articles state how  time with the mom and siblings is so important. How the last few weeks of being with the litter can develop positive social skills. It also allows the puppy time to be independent and a self thinker.

Since we have purchased Diesel from a quality breeder of Smooth Fox Terriers - I definitely trust her judgement in when it is best for Diesel to move out on his own.  I personality have never had a dog that had puppies. I know very little about raising newborn puppies.  I have gotten all of my dogs at 6 to 8 weeks except for Bo he was the oldest - he was 12 weeks.

All I know is that 10 weeks is feeling like a really long time!! We are so excited for Diesel to come home! I want to hug him so much!

I also wanted to share with everyone a great way to find quality items at great prices.  I like to stop weekly at Petco and check out the clearance section. This was a good week for sales....I found a harness, collar, and leash in a Deep Plum color all 75% off and also a few items for next Christmas at 90% off! Diesel will be stylin!
Plus, while at Sam's I picked up this fun throw toy and teeth treats for only $4.86 - great deal! It is amazing what deals you can find if you shop around. All of these items for less than $20!

Amazing Coywolf pictures!

Check out these pics! This fellow was behind the school in a field on Wednesday at 3:17pm. We are all pretty sure he is a Coywolf. A Coywolf is a gray wolf-coyote hybrid.

We live in rural southeast Wisconsin in farm country. There has been much talk about the spotting of Coy-wolves in our area.

One of the markings of a Coywolf is the wolf like tail. This animal definitely has all of the markings of a Coywolf. I was able to find a website with some great info on the Coywolf. Check out Coywolf.org ~ click HERE

41: A Portrait of My Father by George W. Bush

41: A Portrait of My Father

George W. Bush, the 43rd President of the United States, has authored a personal biography of his father, George H. W. Bush, the 41st President.

Forty-three men have served as President of the United States. Countless books have been written about them. But never before has a President told the story of his father, another President, through his own eyes and in his own words. A unique and intimate biography, the book covers the entire scope of the elder President Bush’s life and career, including his service in the Pacific during World War II, his pioneering work in the Texas oil business, and his political rise as a Congressman, U.S. Representative to China and the United Nations, CIA Director, Vice President, and President.  The book shines new light on both the accomplished statesman and the warm, decent man known best by his family. In addition, George W. Bush discusses his father’s influence on him throughout his own life, from his childhood in West Texas to his early campaign trips with his father, and from his decision to go into politics to his own two-term Presidency.

Magic Jack

Have you heard of Magic Jack. The phone system that you install using your internet and your phone.  The Magic Jack cost $59.99 at Best Buy. What is fantastic about Magic Jack is - phone service for 1 year (US & Canada) only cost $35.00!!!!!

The system was super easy to install and we can not tell any difference with the service.  We had digital phone service through Time Warner.  Our bill kept getting higher and higher for no additional service.  That is so frustrating since we knew the phone system was running off of our internet system.

Dehydrated Cranberries

Check out my newest dehydrated food. Cranberries! While shopping at the market I noticed that bags of fresh cranberries were on sale for $1.00. I thought why not give it a try to dehydrate them. My whole family loves snacking on dried cranberries. We also love them in our oatmeal and cookies.

All you need is a dehydrator - cranberries & honey.

One bag of fresh cranberries makes about one cup of dried cranberries.
I covered the cranberries with a small amount of honey then used my Nesco Dehydrator to dehydrate them. It took about 24 hours to get the cranberries dried.  My dehydrator will dry up to 12 trays. I like using lots of trays - makes it easy to dehydrate quite a lot of product at one time.I have a been dehydrating my own fruits and veggies for over a year. Great way to make healthy snacks and save lots of money.
Now is the perfect time to purchase fresh cranberries ~ they are on sale.

Your Everyday

Wisconsin is in a Deep Freeze

Like so many other people we are stuck in a DEEP FREEZE! The temps in Wisconsin are BONE CHILLING. Schools have been closed for the last three days. The winds are blowing and the snow is falling.
TODAY'S MAPS

A few facts about staying warm & safe in extremely cold weather:
  • Make sure NOT to overdue outside. Working in the emergency room I know all to well what happens when people over due outside. Make sure to wear warm layers and do not over exhaust yourself.  Did you know when your hands get cold, it causes blood vessels in the heart to constrict and reduce the blood supply to your heart. If you have a heart blockage of 20% ~ that same blockage can be 70% to the constricting walls in the cold weather condition. ALWAYS have on GOOD GLOVES to KEEP YOU HANDS WARM while snow shoveling or working outside during cold weather!!!
  • Make sure to check the air in your tires. Yesterday while driving on the expressway - a gentleman pulled up to us motioning my tire was low.   I pulled off the expressway and sure enough it was extremely low on air. Dawn added air - THANK YOU to the man that warned us. He saved us from having a flat tire. He gave us a simple Act of Kindness that made a world of difference. It was -25 degrees when he told us - he rolled down his window driving down the road and motioned to us. He went out of his way to make a difference. I came home told my hubby what happened and he explained that my tires are not losing air - the air is becoming denser. Denser air takes up less space making the tire pressure lower. Make sure to check your tires!!!
  • In August I purchased Thermal Drapes for every room in our home.  I can not stress how much difference the drapes are making at keeping our home warmer. Our home is so much warmer while using less energy. My hubby and are are totally amazed. The down fall is our home is now like a cocoon.  With little to no sun shine and high winds we have been keeping the drapes closed. I laugh and tell my hubby this is like a cave. He smiles and says "Yep a warm cave!" Seriously if you have extremely cold temps outside and want to save on energy and keep your home warm - purchase thermal drapes. I purchased mine from SHOPKO - Northcrest brand. They are not that expensive and they look very nice. Add decorative rods and drape rings and you have a classic look.
  • My hubby told me to add this helpful hint - Now is a perfect time to do some baking. Wednesday when it was -30 with wind chill - I decided to make some bread. I not only warmed up the kitchen - I put a HUGE smile on hubby's face. He LOVES fresh hot bread!
STAY WARM!
Do you have a helpful hint on how to stay warm in extreme cold weather?

Broken Trust by Thomas Maurin

This is a story about three smart, successful people who were once fast friends in college and have now been thrust together again in an unlikely, multi-layered investigation with far-reaching international implications and billions of dollars at stake. One is a forensic accountant for the SEC, one beta tests hardware and software for the US Department of Defense and the UK Ministry of Defense, and the third is a wildly successful entrepreneur, software developer and venture capitalist in Silicon Valley.

They get caught up in the hunt for a corrupt Swiss banker intent on finally unloading the last of the gold stolen by his father in World War II; a violent, narcissist leader of a Mexican drug cartel making his move to take over as the head of all cartels in Central America; and the daughter of a murdered Bulgarian arms dealer making the deal that will give her mother financial stability and get them both out of the increasingly unstable arms business.

The plot unfolds as financial crimes committed by insiders put common criminal activities to shame in a world where technology has increasingly insinuated itself into our lives to good and bad effects.
Review
Very interesting book about finding the truth. Who and What!  I found myself unable to put the book down - I would say "Just one more chapter." Right away with Fitz's character I was hooked. I seemed to be able to totally relate with her.  Very good read. I highly recommend Broken Trust.  Bonnie and Michael did an excellent job keeping me wanting more!

Barking Wednesday

This Barking Wednesday is a sad post.  Kingers passed away on December 27th, 2014 from a brain tumor.

In December of 2013 Kingers had his first seizure. He was tested for all things that would cause a seizure. All test results came back negative. The only other reason for the seizure would be a brain tumor. The test that would detect a brain tumor was a MRI. The MRI cost $3,000. We decided to not have a MRI - treat him with medicine and pray that his tumor does not grow. Taking the medicine Kingers did not have another seizure until December 27th ~ the medicine stopped the seizures but was unable to stop the tumor from growing.

The Friday after Christmas I left on my trip to visit my Mom for the holidays. On Saturday morning...Kingers had a terrible seizure on our deck. Terrible seizure causing him to loss the ability to control his hind legs. My hubby, daughter and son in law immediately took Kingers to the vet. His vet of almost 12 years felt that the brain tumor had grown in size causing the seizure and the inability for him to control his legs. With many many tears - my hubby and I decided to end Kingers pain sending him to heaven.   My hubby and son in law stayed with Kingers while he fell asleep for his final nap.

Kingers was born on May 3rd, 2003. We purchased him from a friends sister that had a litter of 9 Lab Puppies. I remember his first ride home ~he cried like a baby the whole trip.  King got his name from our motorcycle - a Harley Road King.

We are extremely sad that Kingers died ~ but I have 11 1/2 years of fun memories.

  • When he was 3 months old I registered for Puppy Kindergarten. I went dressed in my business suit and Kingers was ready to learn.  After the 1st class..the instructor asked that we not return. I was shocked! Since King was so friendly he was definitely distracting others!  We got in the car, came home and told Dad we have been kicked out of Puppy Kindergarten.  We still laugh about that! Who gets kicked out of Puppy Kindergarten?? King & I!
  • The Kindergarten teacher will never know that King went onto being one of the BEST Therapy Dogs! I worked in healthcare and he came to work with me every day for 6 years. Patients loved him!  He made a huge difference in their quality of life. He was extremely well trained!  Guess Miss Negative Puppy Kindergarten Teacher should of given him more of a chance!
  • The time he ran away in a rain storm. I slipped on my blue leather loafers to chase him.  I threw rocks in the field so he though they were balls. I tricked him and he ran to me to play! When we got back to the camper I looked down at my feet and they were BLUE! The dye in the leather turned my feet BLUE! That was the subject
of many a laugh the whole camping weekend!  The lady with the blue feet!
  • The Fox Spotting Adventure with Davey - February 2013! Check out this pic! They were both looking for foxes!  Davey looking one direction and Kingers the other.  I laugh at the pic...they both have each others back!

When I retired so did he..we spent our days goofy off and trying new items. He was always right there with me while I blogged, tested products, or worked outside.
He was always by my side and never asked anything of me. He loved me no matter how I felt! My hubby and I were his life! He loved the children and grandchildren and everything that involved us!

He slept in our bed until he could no longer jump or climb stairs. He ate the best food, wore the crazy collars and always had the latest toys.
He loved to go to the camper and LOVED to ride the golf cart!

Isa traveled with me to my Mom's...when I explained what had happened to Kingers - Isa was so upset.  I explained how now Dozer & Kingers are together. Kingers joined him in heaven. Dozer and Kingers were the bestest of friends! Now the two of them can play and ride golf carts all over heaven!
Dozer (Grandpuppy) passed away in April of 2014 from Bone Cancer.
We lost two amazing companions in one year.

Our house is quiet - no more nudges with his nose. Our eyes are red but our hearts are packed full of fantastic memories of him. He will never be gone..he will live on forever in our hearts.
Kingers we love you and miss you so much.

My Word for 2015

Have you ever picked one word to be your focus or driving force for the year?
My WORD for 2015 is PATIENCE.

The meaning per Webster for patience:

 - pa·tience - the capacity, habit, or fact of being PATIENT
 - pa·tient - able to remain calm and not become annoyed when waiting for a long time or dealing with problems or difficult people

It has taken me a few years but I finally think I understand. Patience is key to happiness. My goal for 2015 is to be more patient with everything in my life.  I will need consistent reminding to slow down breath and wait ~ "If it is meant to be it will happen." is what I will be telling my self for 2015.

By having PATIENCE as my focus for 2015 I hope to slow down, relax, wait and accept life ~ while being content in the fact that things happen for a reason.

If you picked a word for 2015 -  please let me know!

What to do with Leftover Biscuits

This past week I learned what to do with leftover biscuits. You know the extra biscuits from Kentucky Fried Chicken - the extra Pillsbury biscuits from breakfast.

Last Thursday while visiting my Mom for the holidays I found out a great way to make them tasty the next day.

They always dry out fast ~ Taste terrible warmed in the microwave ~ Hard like rocks when warmed in the oven.

All you have to do is slice them in half and pop them in the toaster!

DELICIOUS TOASTED BISCUITS!

Check out the leftover biscuits I brought home from Cracker Barrel!
Top with butter and jelly!  YUM!
Great way to have a quick tasty breakfast treat using leftover biscuits!

Thanks Mom!!!
Heck I am never too old to learn new tricks!
