Barking Wednesday ~ Dog Collars

This Barking Wednesday I wanted to talk about Dog Collars.  Gosh there is so much information online about  which collar is best for dogs.  I think it should be worded the other way around. Which collar is best for which breed of dog and also take into consideration the personality of the dog.

King my Black Lab that passed after Christmas always worn a neck collar. A Tough Hound Collar with all of his information engraved on the collar.

King always liked a collar - he never had any issue with wearing a collar. The Tough Hound Collar had no rough edges and was made of strong leather. Since King was over 100 pounds  - we needed a strong collar. I liked the fact that his information was always on his collar. No risk of losing any dangling tags.

King played outside and always stayed in the yard. Often he would be outside by himself.

Diesel on the other hand HATES a collar! He acts like we are killing him when we put on a collar. Right now I  am not a fan of a collar on Diesel because his neck is small and I would think it would hurt if he pulled on it.  So for Diesel we are using two different type of harnesses on him. A coat harness and a lead harness.
Since Diesel only weighs 12 pounds a harnesses works great. Diesel is never outside alone and we are always with him. When Diesel is in the house we take off the harnesses. When he gets older we plan to have him also wear a collar.

A few tips I do know about collars:
  • Never leave a chock collar on a dog when not training the dog
  • Never leave a Prong or Pinch collar on a dog when not training the dog
  • Many collar companies will engrave or embroider your dogs info on the collar
  • Make sure the collar has no rough edges that could cause skin irrational for your dog
  • Some collars have breakaway clasp to prevent chocking
  • If the dog collar is cloth - make sure to wash it often to ensure it is clean to prevent skin irritation.
  • Beware of plastic collars they can get hot and cause skin irritation.
  • Harness collars come in varies designs - find out which design works best for your dog.
  • Coat collars are by size. I like to try on the coats at the store to make sure they fit properly. Coats are not one size fits all and a medium in one brand may not be the same size in a different brand.

Guest Post ~ Do You Have the Courage to Be You? by Jenny Williamson

You were created on purpose for a purpose.

Let that thought sink deep into who you are—deep into a place where logic cannot interrupt. Contemplate your own uniqueness. Let yourself become pregnant with the possibility there is something distinctive that you and only you were created to do. Ponder this fact—if you don’t dream it, create it, write it, tell it, sing it, or build it—“it” won’t ever be done. Ignore the negative voices attempting to tell you another story. Dare to believe that you have a water walking, giant slaying, history making destiny that will change you and your world.
I understand believing in a purpose and discovering it are two different things. Finding the answers to the age-old questions “Who am I?” and “What am I supposed to be doing?” can seem daunting, ambiguous, and unattainable, especially when you are already overwhelmed by the demands placed upon you — paying the bills, going to work, raising kids, attending school and meeting everyone else’s expectations. A journey of purpose can end up on the bottom of your already long, list of things to do as excuses are offered to rationalize, why there is no time to contemplate or pursue our unique purpose.
However, I believe buried beneath the excuses is the real truth. Most of us just do not believe we even have a purpose. That belief can defeat us before we even begin forcing us to return to our routines, responsibilities, and lives filled trivia and mediocrity. I know, because that is exactly what I believed and what I did for years until I heard a question whispered to my heart …

Worth the Weight by Mara Jacobs

As many of you know my husband is a Yupper. Yep - born in Laurium, Michigan - at the top of the  upper peninsula. We do not live there but have often thought about moving to the Copper Country. In fact about 2 years ago we gave it some serious consideration to moving to Calumet. The country is beautiful - unlike anywhere else in the world.

I found Worth of Weight by scanning free romance novels. Thank goodness I decided to take a chance and read the book. I love the characters ~ Mara does an excellent job expressing their emotions. I found myself caught up int he real life drama of the book.

Worth the Weight is Book 1 in the New York Times bestselling Worth Series

A New Body...
A New Life...
An Old Flame?

Lizzie Hampton is literally a shadow of her former self. Having lost half her body weight, she's headed to her small hometown to test out her new body on an old flame.
Just a harmless fling to get her self confidence back before she returns to
the city and the new man in her life.

But Lizzie's plan has a few bumps in the road.

Finn Robbins can't believe Liz is back in town. Desperate to be the holder of her innocence eighteen years ago, he never got the chance.
Now she's back and he can finally check her off his to do list.

But her friends, his son, and the mysterious Annie may have something to say about that.

This book contains 2-3 fairly graphic love scenes and the F-bomb is detonated somewhat frequently. If it was a movie, it would be rated a hard R.

Worth the Weight is Book one in the Worth Series - I am excited about reading the others.

I always buy both Kindle & Audible - I use Whispersync. It is a great way to enjoy both reading and being read to.
Check it out - when you purchase the Kindle book you have a option to add Whispersync for only $1.99 ~ GREAT DEAL!!!!
Also -  right now Worth the Weight is FREE on Amazon!

Earth Day Month ~ EO Products is Making a Difference!

Description: marketing:__2014:LOGOS:eoProducts_logo:EOproducts_logo.png
20 Years of Earth Day at EO Products

EO Sets the Bar for Sustainability in the Personal Care Industry

Want to know what's rare in the beauty industry? A company that manufactures everything in house.  Want to know what else is rare in the beauty industry? A company that prioritizes sustainability in everything that it does, every single day.

What does sustainability mean to EO? It¹s not just about recycling and lowering energy usage. It's
about creating healthy products from the inside out, and business practices that sustain that integrity. While delivering organic and non-GMO personal care products to the world, they feel a responsibility to reduce the impact of their plastic bottles and manufacturing practices.

When EO began 20 years ago, their goal was to create a higher level of responsibility for products that go on people¹s bodies and in the ground. The most impactful thing we do is create products that are healthy for people and don¹t pollute the planet, said Susan Griffin-Black, co-founder and co-CEO of EO Products. Larger volume brands can tell a great story about the tons of paper they saved, or the recycle path for their packaging, but what¹s inside the package? Is it toxic to humans and the environment?

On the Inside EO Formulations

Organic (when available) and Natural Ingredients
       Non-GMO
       Gluten Free
       Vegan
       Cruelty Free
       Synthetic Fragrance Free
       Paraben Free
       Disodium EDTA Free
       Sodium Laureth/Lauryl Sulfate Free
       Polysorbate Free

On the Outside EO Packaging

EO has had to work hard and search wide to secure the technology for the 100% PCR packaging on their renowned blue bottles. Glass is not an option for kids in the bathtub, so how do you deliver healthy products in a way that feels good? They are just at the cusp of being able to leverage their volume where they can demand more earth-friendly innovations from their suppliers. Since they have the organic and natural formulations down to a science, EO can focus on innovations in manufacturing and packaging. Here are some initiatives for 2015:

€  Label Backing  The backing of a label is usually wax paper; half of the label is waste (the backing). As soon as the label industry was able to make a liner made from PET, EO jumped on it. They recycle the PET liner and it gets turned into recycled flooring and decking.

€  Pulp Packaging  EO is always looking at ways to close the loop on use and re-use. As they integrate more cardboard pulp packaging (like egg cartons), the goal is to take existing cardboard and close that loop by recycling with a local BCorp partner to turn it into new packaging.

EO Founder Brad Black in warehouse sharing new packaging

€  Hotel Amenities  In the past, EO provided the hotel industry with amenity products in 1.5 oz. plastic bottles. This never felt right because it creates so much waste. According to the Plastic Disclosure Project, approximately 8 million tons of plastic waste finds its way into the oceans every year. In 2015, EO is finalizing the move to a 100% refill program with hotels, fitness centers and business janitorial services.
EO's goal is to be Zero Waste Certified by Q1 2016
Core Values
EO chooses to manufacture in house because it allows control over quality and integrity in the process of formulating each and every product they make over 250 and growing.

For them, the word Ĺ’control means Ĺ’intention ‹with conscious actions and understanding our impact on ourselves and others, said Brad Black, co-founder and co-CEO of EO Products.  How they participate on a day to day, minute by minute basis with a deeper engagement with the outcome.  You can't buy that or shop it out because you have to be engaged. That's why they come to work to maintain core values in everything they do.

Recycle by Supporting Cell Phones for Soldiers

Check out how a national military nonprofit, started by kids, funds its mission by recycling unwanted cellphones?

For more than a decade, the national nonprofit, Cell Phones For Soldiers has provided free communication services to active-duty military members and veterans by recycling mobile devices. The charity works with and engages thousands of volunteers to collect and recycle used cellphones to benefit military members.
Cell Phones For Soldiers has more than 3,800 public cellphone drop-off locations across the country. The proceeds from recycling the phones are used to fund the charity’s two programs, Minutes That Matter and Helping Heroes Home. Since its inception, the charity has kept more than 11.6 million cellphones out of landfills.

The charity was founded in 2004 with $21, by then 11 and 12 -year-old brother and sister, Robbie and Brittany Bergquist. They were inspired by a local solider returning from Iraq who had incurred an almost $8,000 phone bill while deployed.

Barking Wednesday ~ Vet Visit

Welcome to Barking Wednesday. Today I wanted to share with everyone Diesel's first Vet Appointment.

I took Diesel to a new vet. When I was deciding on a new vet - I wanted a small practice.
I like the smaller practices where the staff know you and your animal. When we started with Dr. Harris he had just graduated from school and had been working with a larger practice. He started his own practice and we followed him. After years of building his practice - he had a huge practice with five vets working for him. We were still okay since I always requested Dr. Harris. Since he retired and sold the practice to two of the vets on his staff - the personalized care seemed to be gone for me. Once King passed and we got Diesel, I knew it was time for us to move on to a new vet.

Going to a new vet ~ seems so odd to me. I choose Countryside Veterinary Clinic in Burlington for Diesel's new vet. Small practice - his wife is the office manager and he has two assistants. I was made to feel welcomed and I do believe I have found a fit for us.  I got the feeling that Diesel also liked him and the vet office.

As always I came prepared with my list of questions for Dr George. I can not stress the importance of being prepared when you take your dog to the vet. I have learned the hard way that once inside if I do not have my list of questions - I miss very important topics I wanted to discuss.

My Questions for the Vet were:
  • Heartworm treatment? Which treatment is best for his breed.
  • When is he due for more shots?
  • His weight?
  • When will Diesel be full grown?
  • Amount of food he recommends for his size?
  • Nail clipping?
  • Hiccups?
  • Scratching? Allergies?
  • Does he need supplements to his diet?
  • Is the amount of exercise he is getting sufficient?
  • Behaviors associated with Smooth Fox Terriers?
Diesel's vet appointment was a success. Next appointment the end of the month for his last puppy shot.
Diesel's new vet is Country Veterinary Service ~ Dr. William George, DVM. I am positive we will have a great working relationship - when I felt comfortable during our first visit - I know it is a meant to be!

Are you familiar with Coolibar?
