Salmon Dog Treat Recipe #BarkingWednesday

This Barking Wednesday I wanted to share with you a new twist on Dog Treats. Diesel's obedience teacher told me to bring a smelly treat. Since Diesel uses his nose a lot - she felt he might pay more attention if his treats were smelly. She told me a treat with fish would be good.

I decided to make him Salmon Treats. I took my basic recipe and instead of adding veggies I added canned salmon.

Take one can of salmon  ~ placed the salmon and water into a bullet blender. Blend the salmon and water. Poured the mixture into a large mixing bowl ~ gradually start to add whole wheat flour ~ keep adding until you have a nice consistency. I wanted to roll the dough into long ropes so that I could cut them into small treat sizes.

Cut out parchment paper and line your cookie sheet. Place
the cut pieces on to the cooking sheet then bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes.

Once they were finished cooking I divided the treats into 6 bags. Once bag for each class.  I then froze the treats.

Before each class I take a bag of treats out of the freezer and take them to class with us!

Sometimes the simplest of ingredients are often over looked when trying to prepare a memorable meal for friends and family. From scrambled eggs in the morning to flavorful fish tacos for lunch, a spoonful of this simple mix can sure go a long way.
Terra's Kitchen, meal-delivery service is sharing 10 different ways to dress up a dish using this simple, fun dish.

For a healthier, tastier breakfast, spoon a dollop of fresh Pico de Gallo over scrambled eggs as opposed to ketchup! With fewer calories, less sugar and more fresh ingredients, your taste buds and waist line will thank you.

Tired of the same boring pasta with tomato sauce? Looking for a way to jazz it up? Next time you have pasta night, toss whole wheat pasta, olive oil, white beans and Pico de Gallo for a quick 15 minute meal that your family will think you slaved over!

Do you enjoy eggplant and its health benefits, but struggle to up its taste profile? Spoon Pico de Gallo over your grilled eggplant for a healthy, tasty topping.

Stir Pico de Gallo with fresh corn kernels and black beans for a quick side dish, or even a tasty filling to your burritos.

Falling Through Thin Ice – What to do?

Temperatures around the country have dropped, snow is beginning to fall and the official start of winter has come and gone. But before grabbing ice fishing gear, sleds, snow shoes and skates to enjoy the wintery outdoors, it is best to take early season precautions and remind kids about the dangers of seemingly frozen water. While a pond, lake or stream can appear to be frozen solid with snow piled on top of it, the ice may not be thick enough to support a person. And, a fall into icy water can cause instant panic if you are not sure how to react making a dangerous situation even more precarious.

US Swim School Association’s Guide to Surviving a Fall Through the Ice
Learn how to get out of the water in the event of falling through breaking ice

It is never a good idea to walk onto a frozen lake without following the proper protocols and knowing how long it takes and what temperature must be hit for that body of water to freeze. Each year, it’s estimated that nearly 8,000 people die from drowning. Even though ice may appear safe, some areas can be thinner than others. Unfortunately, when venturing onto ice, not everyone has a friend nearby or carries an item such as an ice pick to help them out of the water. The United States Swim School Association, the leading swim school organization in the country, has created a list of what to do if you fall through ice.

Falling Through Thin Ice – What to do?

Brace Yourself: This may be difficult to do at first but due to the immediate change in body temperature and shock from the cold water, the body’s immediate reaction is going to be to gasp for air and hyperventilate. Breathing in the freezing water increases the chances of drowning.

Keep Calm: Do not flail your arms; this will release more body heat. The body loses 32 times more heat in cold water than in cold air. Panicking will do nothing, keep your head above the water, grab onto the ice in the direction you came from. This ice should be strong enough to help you out of the water.

Do Not Undress Winter Clothes: Keep winter clothing on while in the water, it will not drag you down. It will help keep in body heat and any air inside the clothing will help you float.

Get Horizontal: Once you’ve gotten most of your upper body out of the water, kick your legs as strongly as possible in hopes of getting yourself out of the water and onto the ice.

Roll Onto The Ice: Do not stand up, roll over the ice once you’re out to help prevent more cracks in the ice and from falling in again. Always stay off ice that’s only 3 inches thick or less.

Retrace Your Steps: Once out and far enough away from the hole, trace your footsteps back to safety. Take it slow because your body is still dealing with the affects of the freezing water.

Throw, Don’t Go: Never enter the water to rescue someone. If someone is there to help you it is safer for that person to throw a lifesaving device, branch, coat, or rope into the water, wait until you grab hold and then tow you to safety. Otherwise you could both end up in the water.

Get Warm: Once out of the water seek medical attention to bring body temperature back to normal.

Dogs with Special Dietary Needs

We live in a health-conscious society, and people are more aware than ever before of the importance of what goes into their body. In some cases, this has even led to entire dietary movements. Just consider all of the following diets, each of which requires significant lifestyle changes on behalf of the person:

Vegetarian diet

Vegan diet

Gluten-free diet

Paleo diet

Low-carb diet

Given our heightened awareness regarding the importance of what we place in our bodies, it only stands to reason that some dog owners are increasingly concerned about what goes into their pet’s diet as well. This has led to a heightened interest in everything from raw meat diets to hypoallergenic dog food.

However, it should be noted that putting together a diet that’s both healthy and delicious for your dog is easier said than done. It’s easy enough to source fresh meat that your dog will enjoy eating, but a diet that consists exclusively of meat is not going to provide all of the vitamins and nutrients required to keep your dog in top shape. This is where scientifically formulated food comes into play.

Proper Nutrition for Your Dog
If it lived in the wild, your dog would subsist largely upon animal products. This would include meat, organs and even raw bones, the set of which deliver a powerful selection of nutrients and vitamins. However, when you go shopping for raw food to feed your dog, it’s easy to overlook the importance of, say, offal for iron and other vitamins, or of bones for added calcium.

However, high quality pet food is going to be made from real animal products to begin with. Lesser brands are prone to cutting corners with plant-based fillers that can boost the appearance of nutritional content (such as protein) without actually supplying your dog with real nutrition that its body can break down.

That’s why it’s a good idea to feed your dog a base of high-quality kibble that meets all of its nutritional requirements from the outset. This allows you to supplement with special treats and snacks that you pick up when grocery shopping, without having to worry that your dog may not be getting the complete nutrition that it requires.

Even Dogs Can Have Allergies
Just like people, some dogs are naturally more sensitive to some ingredients. This could be outright allergies or something more subtle – such as difficulty digesting gluten. If you feel that your dog may be experiencing an adverse reaction to something in its diet, the first thing that you should do is schedule an appointment with your vet to determine what – if anything – is causing the problem.

Your veterinarian will then be able to recommend a high-quality hypoallergenic dog food that will be easier on your dog’s tummy. Anyone who has ever suffered from food allergies themselves can testify to the relief experienced once the allergen is removed from the diet. Needless to say, your dog will feel and act like a new animal – with more energy, less discomfort and an all-around brighter demeanour.

Create Unique, Natural-Looking Aquariums in Your Home

Aquariums add tranquility to the setting of your home. Hearing the gentle trickling flow of water takes away the day's stresses. Watching the fish swim and play is relaxing. Having an
aquarium in your home helps with temperamental children, depression and anxiety.

Consider an Aquarium Kitchen Island
The kitchen is the heart of a home and is often where friends and family gather during get togethers. The kitchen island can become a focal point when the base is made into a large aquarium with natural-looking elements. Take the time to search for live plants and coral to make the setting look like an underwater ocean-scape theme.
It is important to have dimensional elements and hiding places for the fish as well. Consider a rock pile to create ledges for the fish to hide under and a few small houses as well. Wholesale aquarium supplies can help build the filtering and lighting systems in each setup, especially when working on a budget.

Making End Tables and Book Cases

In the living and family rooms, where families gather to watch television and movies, is another ideal location for a unique aquarium. Consider a custom coffee table made from several round aquariums. Thick glass can act as the tabletop so that viewing the fish from all angles is possible.
For bookcase options, dedicate one shelf for aquarium space. Include a background for the aquarium that matches the interior theme. Back-lighting is also ideal to further illuminate fish with neon color inclusions and highlight some of the landscape at the same time.

Built-in Wall Displays in Bedrooms
If your children have difficulties falling asleep at night, consider adding an aquarium to the space. It is calming and the ambient light from it will help calm their minds to fall asleep faster. Place the aquarium within view of the child's bed. Being able to watch the fish swim and glare through the landscape is helpful for settling irritable children at bedtime. The ideal location for this type of setup is in a wall cut-out so that it is difficult for the child to have an opportunity to cause the aquarium to fall and break.

One of the good things about aquariums is that the options for customization are so versatile that a theme can be created for any room in the home. Multiple aquariums can be setup in different rooms, each having a specific theme to suit the space. Get creative and consider seasonal decor changes for the fish to make it a little more fun for the family.

Bayer® ExpertCareTM ~ Care Coat Cleaning Foam ~ #BayerExpertCare ~ #sponsored

This post is sponsored by Bayer® ExpertCareTM and the BlogPaws Influencer Network. I am being compensated for helping spread the word about Bayer ExpertCare products but Green and Glassie only shares information we feel is relevant to our readers. Bayer ExpertCare is not responsible for the content of this article.

As many of you know I have been testing three of Bayer® ExpertCareTM shampoo products.
Moisturizing Shampoo
Itch Relief Shampoo
Coat Cleansing Foam

This month I tested the Bayer Expert Care Coat Cleaning Foam. The air outside is freezing! Wisconsin is know for very cold windy winters. I have always hated giving my dogs a bath in the winter. I hate the thought that Diesel would have to go outside with wet hair. Dog hair can feel dry to touch but the lower layer can still be damp. At 0 degrees damp fur is not good. That is the main reason I wanted to give Bayer Expert Coat Cleaning a try.

I LOVE ~ LOVE ~ LOVE Bayer Expert Coat Cleaning. The smell is so clean! Diesel's fur looks clean and smells clean. So easy to use. All you need is a towel and your bottle of Bayer Expert Coat Cleaning.
Shake the bottle then place some foam in your hand and rub all over your dog. Once you have the foam dissolved into the fur use the towel to dry your dog off. If needed you can use a brush to remove any unwanted hair. Super easy and Diesel loved the rubbing.

I like the fact that loss hairs are loosened and brushed away. Which helps to keep his hair off the couch :).

Diesel always has to go potty after a bath. Today was the first time I have owned a dog that I felt okay letting him outside to potty after a bath on a cold winter January day in Wisconsin! I was dry - he was dry **** WONDERFUL!

I trust Bayer ExpertCare as quality products made especially for dogs and cats. Bayer Expert products are specially formulated for cats and dogs for health and wellness.

Bayer  Expert Care products are available exclusively at PetSmart.

I like the fact that I can go to PetSmart and find a Bayer EpertCare product to help correct a issue with Diesel. Bayer ExpertCare offers a wide variety of health products for dogs & cats ~ Skin Care, Health & Wellness, and Ear Care. PetSmart is a great place for Diesel! PetSmart loves animals. We both love shopping at PetSmart.

#Barking Wednesday ~ Easy to Make Healthy Dog Treats

This Barking Wednesday I want to share with everyone my favorite easy recipe for dog treats.  Diesel & Digger love them. Carrot is Diggers favorite veggie and Pea is Diesel's favorite veggie.

Basic Dog Treat Recipe

1 can vegetable
2+ cups of wheat flour

Place one can of vegetable in a bullet blender.
In a large bowl combine pureed vegetables and 2 cups of wheat flour. Use a spatula to mix well....continue to add wheat flour until you have the proper texture and moisture.  I do not like the dough to be sticky.

I use parchment paper on cookie sheets. Using the paper makes clean up super easy.
Bake 350 degrees for 20 - 25 minutes

Place the baked treats in a dehydrator for 12 - 16 hours.

This Sunday we made three varieties of the basic recipe:
Carrot & Wheat basted with beef broth flavored Twist - I use beef broth to baste the Twist when they were finished baking

Pea & Wheat basted with beef broth flavored Pretzels  - I use beef broth to baste the Pretzels when they were finished baking

Carrot ~ Bacon ~ Honey Bites .... add about 1/4 cup of real bacon bits and 1 tablespoons on honey

I like making treats for Diesel & Digger know what is in the treats is very important to me. Saving cash on natural treats is also nice. Natural treats can be made for pennies.

Benefits of using carrots, peas and honey:
Carrots are good for your dogs teeth, low in calories and high in fiber, beta carotene and vitamin A.

Peas are high in protein, potassium and magnesium, and contain calcium, iron, vitamin A, vitamin B6, vitamin K, and other good things. They are also a very good source of dietary fiber.

Honey helps to prevent bad bacteria in your dog’s digestive tract plus it is a energy booster.
