Nordic Trail ~ Kettle Moraine Wisconsin State Park

Yesterday we found a great trail to hike ~ Nordic Trail. The Nordic Trail is part of the SE Kettle Moraine Wisconsin State Park.  The trail has numerous routes depending on how many miles you are wishing to hike. It is also a snow shoe shoeing, cross country ski, and jogging trail.

The trail is very nice - wide and the views are spectacular. Yesterday it was 19 degrees windy overcast with light snow.

The fresh snow made the hike interesting. Identifying tracks has turned into a hobby for me. I seen deer, rabbit, and I am pretty sure raccoon.

Here are a few pics from the day!  The pics show how black and white Wisconsin woods are in the winter.  The last pic you can see a few leaves on a tree - other than that the scenery is basically black and white.

If we would of gotten more than a dusting of snow - we would not have been able to hike. But with only about 1 inch of snow - that is not enough for cross country skiing - so hiking was a go!

The entrance of the trail has restrooms, warming shelter, picnic tables, and a nice area for gathering. Making this trail a great place for us to schedule a hike with friends and grandchildren for next Saturday.

Hiking Cross-Country Skiing Nordic trail system

This trail, on County Highway H south of the Village of Palmyra, provides hiking and skiing for skate and classical stride cross-country skiers through a variety of vegetation, hardwoods, pine plantations, open meadows and kettle moraine terrain. There are six different trails of varying lengths and degrees of difficulty, providing great hiking or skiing for all levels of ability. A warming shelter is open every day and convenient parking, vault toilets and a sledding hill are also available at the trailhead. Hiking is not allowed when the trails are snow covered. Bikes are not allowed on this trail system.

benecos ~ Natural Makeup

As you guys are aware I try to eat and live chemical free.  One of the items that seems to be my most difficult to really like is my makeup.  So when I was asked to give benecos a try I jumped at the chance to give a new makeup a try.

I received a liquid foundation - eye shadow - lip stick. I must say I am impressed. So impressed that I have been sharing the name benecos with all my green friends. Even my non-green friends are interested in the foundation.

The foundation goes on very smoothly. A small amount goes a long way. I found the Honey shade of the Flawless Face Matte Foundation very easy to blend  into my skin color around my hairline and my neck.  I have very sensitive skin - no irritation at all from the foundation. I have been using the foundation for over a week and I am reaction free.

I think Benecos makes my skin look smoother and even toned. Very lightweight and goes on very easily after my moisturizer.
Foundation is for all skin types, including oily and blemish-prone as well as dry or mature.
Available in three shades:
Nude is for porcelain to fair skin. (Note that the Benecos Creamy Foundations run a little lighter than Lavera’s, so the Benecos Nude is ligher than Lavera’s lightest shade Ivory.)
Honey is your shade if you have medium to olive toned skin with a nice warm glow.
Caramel works beautifully for very deep golden to darker olive toned skin.

Hiking I Will Go

Hiking has become my newest favorite pass time.  I have always loved the outdoors but with my busy life I was not able to get out and smell the wild! Every year we would hike while on vacation but when I got home I was always busy doing something else.

Not
anymore!

Now I plan my hiking adventures.

I am super lucky - I have two friends that also love to hike.  This past weekend we spent time with our grandchildren hiking the National Park Ice Age Trail.  Wisconsin has 1100 miles of the Ice Age Trail - beautiful country.

We had a blast!  Life does not get much better than spending quality time with family and friends. What is really nice is that the IAA sponsors weekly hikes. I have joined them on the Wednesday at 10:30am hikes.  They also offer a scheduled Tuesday 4pm hike.  They offer special hikes - Davey & I enjoyed the Owl Nite Hike - we were guided by the light of the Snow Moon. Very fun evening hike. Every event I have met a great group of hikers.

The Ice Age Alliance is a group dedicated to preserving the Ice Age Trail. They do a excellent job of organizing hikes and caring for the trails.

Here are a few pics of Lake LaGrange on the Ice Age Trail. To have 60 degrees in February was a dream come true.

Is Cannabis Good for Your Pet?

Since the use of cannabis as a medical ingredient is currently legal in 23 US states, with California, Maine, Massachusetts and Nevada even allowing the use of recreational marijuana, cannabis is well on its way to being accepted in the whole of the United States of America. Medical cannabis can be used to treat a variety of pain syndromes like neuropathic pain, spasms induced by multiple sclerosis, epileptic seizures, nausea and much more. However, what most of us don’t know is that the benefits of cannabis are not limited to human beings only. Aged dogs in particular, can at times benefit from the use of hemp due to the terpene, phytocannabinoid and flavonoid content in the plant. In spite of that, since dogs are after all different from us, here are a few points which you should consider before introducing your pet to hemp supplements.

Hemp is Not Marijuana

Although both the ingredients come from the same cannabis plant, marijuana and hemp are definitely not one and the same. There are multiple differences between the two, but the main difference between hemp and marijuana is the fact that while the latter is known for its high content of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) which induces psychoactive symptoms, the former is known for its CBD (cannabidiol) content which may actually work against the effects of THC.

The Benefits of Hemp

Hemp seeds are nutritious with high protein content and they raise blood arginine which helps in vasodilation, thereby reducing blood pressure and the chances of cardiac ailments. Hemp seed oil is rich in omega 6 and omega 3 fatty acids, both of which contribute to canine health by reducing arthritis inflammation, allergic dermatitis and chances of kidney disease. Cats affected with FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) or FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis) can also benefit from the Omega 6 fatty acids. Moreover, sick pets suffering from severe pain owing to diseases such as cancer may find some relief through the use of medical cannabis. Regulated administering of hemp treats to dogs in general can lead to a stronger immune system, healthy skin and fur, faster growth and development, better fertility and a more active brain.

Lack of Research

In spite of the possibilities, there has not been enough documented official study done on the effects of using medical cannabis on cats and dogs to give us an established idea about what to expect in terms of both positive and negative effects. While the use of marijuana as a pain-relieving agent on suffering dogs is still illegal in the US, hemp supplements are perfectly legal. It is advised that if you do introduce your dog to the benefits of hemp supplements, do so in moderation to observe the effects it is having on your pet first.

The bottom line is that cannabis does have the potential to be good for your pets. However, we can only take advantage of the benefits of hemp at the moment as medical marijuana for dogs is not yet legal in the states. However, it is of the utmost importance to know the amount of THC and CBD content in each serving when buying a hemp treat. Dogs are significantly more sensitive to cannabis than human beings and therefore, a prominent guideline with detailed info on the ingredients and their composition in the final product is essential to avoid any chances of a THC overdose.
